Putting it Together – an Introduction to “The Norman Conquests” by Henrik Hansen
“I’ve been piecing things together in my mind – fitting the various bits to fill in the picture – building a sort of overall view of things – so I can more or less get an objective angle on it…”
Tom – “Round and Round the Garden” Act II, Scene 2.
Have you ever wondered what the characters do when they exit stage? Do they go into a stasis, a suspended animation, until it is time for them to appear again? Or are they living their complex, rich lives, full of pathos and insightful discoveries in some other place?
Sir Alan Ayckbourn examined this concept in his monumental trilogy “The Norman Conquests.” Instead of having a definitive “Part One, Part Two, Part Three” dynamic, these three plays all cover the same weekend in time, but each play takes place in a different space. “Table Manners” is set in the Dining Room, “Living Together” is in the sitting room and “Round and Round the Garden” (the play you are about to see) is set amongst the plants and lawn furniture.
At the end of the first scene of “Round and Round,” Norman, Sarah and Reg exit into the sitting room. The action picks up immediately as they enter into the first scene of “Living Together.” What happens there, and in the dining room, are neatly capsulized in the second scene of “Round and Round.”
