A Bad Dream
by Simon Brett
Production Dates: 26th and 27th November 2016
Director: Marylin Apps/Sue Noad/Dave Francis
Synopsis
A charming play, full of period detail, is set between June and November 1902, the year of the Coronation of Edward VII. The Bellingford Amateur Dramaticks Society is rehearsing 'A Midsummer Night's Dream'. It has the usual range of different personalities - stalwart group members, young lads about town and daughters of local businessmen.
However, it is a production with a difference as it is being sponsored by, and therefore controlled by, a local entrepreneur and Henry Irving devotee, Sydney De Lainey. Rehearsals, under De Lainey's tyranny, are extremely awkward. As a result, many tensions arise within the company, culminating in De Lainey's brutal murder. This man's untimely demise is set against Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee, the new craze of ping-pong and the brand new science of fingerprinting which is used to solve the crime during the performance of 'A Midsummer Night's Dream'.
